PROPOSITION BETS
HOP BETS

Chapter 8c
PROPOSITION BETS
HOP BETS

The proposition bets are not as confusing as you might think. What is confusing to most people learning to deal or play craps is the silk-screened image in the middle of a craps table. We discussed this in the Hardways page but it is worth mentioning again. That is the terms "To" and "For" printed on the layout prob boxes.
Picture
Most casinos use the term "For" in the props. Notice the image above from two different casinos. One prop box pays the bets using "To" and the other uses the term "For".....Both pay exactly the same.
  • The term "to" means the player keeps the bet when they win.
  • The term "for" means the player loses the bet when they win
Picture
  • 7 to 1 means you win $7 and keep your $1 bet = profit $7
  • 8 for 1 means you win $8 "For" your $1 bet (You lose the bet) = profit $7

So why would they do this? To make the bets appear that the pay more?

Nope

Its is easier to subtract. That's why. When players make multiple bets in the props, it's much easier to subtract all their bets rather than subtracting only the losing bets.
The term "for" in the props is a dealer friendly way to payoff bets faster. We will revisit this subject as we go along. It will all fall into place by the time your done reading this.

PROPOSITION BETS
ONE ROLL ONLY

Below we have a typical Las Vegas craps prop box where the core of the action "prop" bets are located. A proposition bet is a side bet. Think of betting offers on the super bowl, the main money bet is on who will win the game. You can also bet "props" who will score first?
Who will win the coin toss, (Yes, in Vegas you can wager on the coin toss lol) which team will kick a field goal first, Which team will score more points in the first or second quarter etc....Side bets. Props

In boxing, the main bet is on who will win but you can make prop bets on what round your guy will win, you can bet on if your guy knocks the opponent out or wins by judge's scorecard? Side bets. Props.

The main money bets in craps are the Pass-line, DONT bets, Place bets....Bets in the middle are one roll proposition bets. The FIELD is a prop bet, just not handled by the stick dealer. Casinos also offer other side bets off the grid so to speak, like the FIRE BET but the traditional side bets on craps, the "props" we call them, are pictured below.
Picture
Notice that I drew an X over the "All day" Hardways in the pic above.
The Hardways are a side bet, a prop bet but they are not "one roll only" bets as you are aware from reading the last chapter.

The image above.....At the top we have a HOP BET area, look close and you'll see a pic of planet earth called a WORLD BET and below we have the HORN family and the C&E. Confused yet? I'll explain.

First let me separate two bets from all the others.
  • ANY SEVEN
  • ANY CRAPS
Picture
ANY SEVEN is a three set combination bet
  • 1-6, 6-1
  • 2-5, 5-2
  • 3-4, 4-3
6 ways to win
30 ways to lose
Odds are 5 to 1
Bet pays 5 for 1
Minimum bet $1
Picture
ANY CRAPS (C) is a three number (2,3 &12) four-way combination bet
  • 1-1,
  • 6-6
  • 1-2, 2-1,
4 ways to win
32 ways to lose
Odds are 8 to 1
Bet pays 8 for 1
Pass-line players bet this as insurance against the 2,3,12 come-out roll.
Minimum
 bet $1

Those two bets are group bets.
Everything else is a hop bet or based on it.
Picture
A hop bet simply means that the player is betting on a specific roll of the dice. Let's say, 6-3 nine. The dice must roll with a 6 on that one and a 3 on this one. Nine...
"I would like to bet $1 on the 6-3 Nine....on the Hop please"

If the player also wanted the 5-4, that would cost an additional $1 minimum. So it would cost $2 minimum to bet the nine "on the hop" next roll. One roll only.
It's real simple...

Craps players can wager on any number they may have a hunch will roll next. They can bet that 5-2 seven rolls. The will toss you a $1 chip and say "5-2 hop for $1" -  You will repeat the bet out loud and the base dealer will repeat the bet. To win, one die must have a 5 and the other die must have a 2. Any other combination, the bet loses. Even if the dice rolled 6-1 or 4-3 which is also a seven but the player didn't bet "any seven", the player bet the 5-2.......If the dice show 5-2, they win 16 for 1 ($16 "for" each $1 bet) for a profit of 15. You will leave the bet on the table "up to win again" and have the base dealer pay 15.

Or perhaps a player has a hunch that the 4-2 and the 5-1 will roll next.

Player bets $1 on 4-2 and $1 on  5-1 Total $2
The player would call out the bet as "Hop easy 6 for $2"
Shooter rolled a 4-2
The bet will win $16
You keep them "up to win again" by making sure both bets stay on the table for the next roll.
$16 - $2 = $14 to the player and "still up to win again"

Another player also has a hunch the 6 will roll. This person bets "Hop hard 6 for $1". Not a hard 6 we discussed in the last chapter, those bets are not one roll only bets. This is a hard 6 on the hop.... one roll only. Next roll of the dice. If the dice show 3-3 the player wins 31 for 1.... remember 3-3 is a double and when both dice are the same, the bet pays 31 for 1
Players can bet on a 3-1 four, a 3-2 five, a 6-2 eight... any combination
That is all they are doing.
There are two ways to roll every combination in a pair of dice except doubles. When both dice are the same there is only one way to roll it. That is why doubles pay 31 and all other combinations pays 16.
Most craps tables don't have hop bets printed on the layout for whatever reasons. However; every casino that has craps offers hop betting even if the bets are not printed on the felt.
The image below has large picture bets of the most popular hop bets.
Yes the 2 ,3 ,11 & 12 are hop bets.
Wagered together is called a HORN
Picture
There they are, the most popular hop bets, each with their own picture on the layout. They are the stars of the hop show.  Right there in red ink They even have nicknames.
Picture
Ace-deuce, the 3
Is a two way combination bet (1-2, 2-1)
Two ways to win, 34 ways to lose
Odds are 17 to 1, bet pays 16 for 1
Minimum bet $1

Aces, the 2

Is one way combination bet (1-1)
One way to win 35 ways to lose
Odds are 35 to 1, bet pays 31 for 1
Minimum bet $1

The 12 "Midnight"
Is a one way combination bet (6-6)
One way to win, 35 ways to lose
Odds are 35 to 1, bet pays 31 for 1
Minimum bet $1

YO 11

Is a two way combination bet (5-6) (6-5)
Two ways to win, 34 ways to lose
Odds are 17 to 1, bet pays 16 for 1
Minimum bet $1
Picture
HORN BET - 2,3,11 & 12 are HORN numbers
A four number six combination group bet..... but pays as a hop bet. This is why there are no odds payoff numbers on the picture bet that's on a craps table layout. Only the word HORN is printed on the layout. The combinations are not paid as a combined group of six ways but rather as independent hop bets.
  • Minimum HORN bet is $4
  • $1 each on the 2,3,11 & 12
  • If 3 or 11 roll bet pays 16 - 4 = 12 (and still up)
  • If 2 or 12 roll bet pays 31 - 4 = 27 (and still up)
  • The 3 & 11 pay 16 for 1 just like any other hop bet combination. They all have two ways to win.
  • The 2 & 12 pay 31 for 1 just like the other doubles 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 combination. They all only have one way to win

Again, the 2,3,11 & 12 are hop bets. They just so happen to be the most popular hop bets. They get ink. Prime real estate.

Finally, HORN HIGH bets:
  • This is nothing more than a simple HORN bet.
  • Bet in units of five, $5 minimum bet
  • $1 each on 2,3 11 &12, the extra dollar on players favorite HORN number
HORN HIGH ELEVEN (YO) $1 each 2, 3 &12
$2 bet on 11

HORN HIGH TWELVE $1 each 2, 3, 11
$2 bet on 12

HORN HIGH ACE-DEUCE $1 each 2, 11, 12
$2 bet on 3

HORN HI ACES $1 each 3, 11 & 12
$2 bet on 2
HORN bets are in the HOP family. Those bets payoff at 31 and 16. The any SEVEN is easy to pay, $5 for every $1. The Any Craps 8 for 1 payoff (7x bet) is also a no brainer. Most of the payoffs in the prop box are going to be a hop bet.

WORLD BET -

2,3,11,12  and the 7 are WORLD numbers. This bet is also part of the HORN family. Simply put, a World bet is a combination of two bets – a Horn Bet plus an Any Seven.
A five number combination group bet..... Like the HORN bets, there are no odds payoff numbers on the picture bet that's on a craps table layout. Only the words WORLD BET is printed on the layout. The combinations are not paid as a combined group of sets but rather as independent hop bets with the exception of the 7
  • Minimum WORLD bet is $5
  • $1 each on the 2,3,11,12 and 7
  • If 3 or 11 roll bet pays 16 - 5 = 11 (and still up)
  • If 2 or 12 roll bet pays 31 - 5 = 26 (and still up)
  • If 7 rolls...Its a push...doesn't win or lose Pays 5 for 1 (Group pay)
  • The 3 & 11 pay 16 for 1 just like any other hop bet combination. They all have two ways to win.
  • The 2 & 12 pay 31 for 1 just like the other doubles 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 combination. They all only have one way to win
  • The 7 is paid as a group of three sets at  5 for 1

Again, the 2,3,11 & 12 are hop bets. They just so happen to be the most popular hop bets.

The C&E bet is actually a combination of the any craps bet and the yo bet. Basically when you bet on C and E, you are wagering that the shooter will roll any craps numbers (2, 3, or 12) or 11.
The payout odds are actually different for each part of the bet. It normally pays out 3:1 if the crap numbers come up and it pays 7:1 if 11 is rolled if both sides of the bet are the same amount.
The Craps and Eleven Bet is two distinct wagers: it simply adds an 11 to the craps wager.

Picture

House edge is 11.11 percent on easy hops and 13.89 percent on hard hops (Doubles)
Picture
Picture
Player wagers $5 minimum bet HORN HIGH YO as illustrated above
Shooter rolls 11
Player wins $32 ($2 on 11)
Each dollar wins 16 for 1
$32 - $5 = $27

Assume ACES (2) rolled.
There is $1 on 2.
Player wins 31 - 5 = 26

Assume ACE-DEUCE rolled.
There is $1 on 3.
Player wins 16 - 5 = 11

Here are the first five bets and payoffs. This is all I teach new students until they find a comfort level dealing live craps. It works! Funny thing about this is, players rarely if ever bet $6, $7, $8 or $9. They bet the minimum $1 all day everyday. They bet $2, $3 and sometimes $4. They bet $5 a lot but its rare they bet 6,7,8 or 9. They play $5 then tend to press to $10. The popular betting sequence on hop bets is 1 thru 5 then 10, 15, 20, 25, jumps to 50 normally. Memorize the first five bets and payouts. Deal live games and once you're in a comfort zone come back and check out the Advanced Prop Bets in Chapter 13.

Without an ANY SEVEN 5 for 1 betting option, it would cost players $3 to bet the seven as you can see. Now you know why there is a $1 minimum prop bet SEVEN 5 for 1. While we're at it, compare the payoffs of a $3 Three Way Seven to a $3 ANY SEVEN. The answer may surprise you.

Bottom line: As an entry-level craps dealer it is more important to know what these bets really are and where the are placed on the felt. The math is important but craps is dealt tandem. The box supervisor watches the dealer on the base where the shooter stands, while you and the base dealer where the dice land work together. Odds are everyone will be watching your payoffs because you are new.

What is critical is that you can catch these bets tossed in from players, repeat the bet, loud and clear, and how much the player wants to wager. It's critical that you find a home for that bet. FAST. It's critical that the stick calls are loud and clear. It's critical that you can handle the stick, get out of the way, get your losing bets off the table and work with the base dealer the side the dice land upon. It's critical that you know the foundation of dealing the stick. The mechanics.

The math? Not so much. Not as much I should say.

Memorise the first five payoffs will go a very long way.
